About Me

ANDREW A. SMITH

I grew up in a glorious period for comic books and cartoons. In conjunction with X-Men, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Voltron, He-Man, and Battle of the Planets, I studied the Bible, global history, and global mythology. I illustrated what I consumed, and then I wrote and illustrated my own fantasy and comic creations.  The pencil was the original cornerstone on which my art temple was built.

While I dabbled in portraits, animal drawings, and the occasional painted landscape (thank you, Bob Ross), fantasy and comics constituted the vast majority of my work. As a socially awkward, self-conscious only child, part of my stability came from larger-than-life figures.  Even as the world was sometimes too big for me, they controlled dreams and influenced gravity.  By creating, e.g., black and Native American characters, I animated and “animated” particular segments of our (my) world.

When I eventually painted my first oil portrait, I viewed that initial portrait as teaching myself to “draw with a paintbrush.” I soon realized that I did not need to draw in pencil on my canvases beforehand to create the image I wanted.  Oil is an evolutionary step from illustration (but not a replacement) with the added olfactory and tactile sensations.

The year of that portrait was also the year I purchased my first “serious” camera. Much of my photography centers around small details in our world.  After beginning with digital photography, I switched to film, because of, and, in spite of, the discipline, disappointment, and delirium attendant the medium. The film has grown (from 35mm to 8”x10”) even if the subjects have not necessarily.  My photographs provide subjects for my paintings, and some of my favorite photographs are of my finished canvases: the film, the oil, it is my analog amalgam.

“Whether it’s the feel of the wood of my tripod or the wood of my easel, the sound of the gears as you maneuver a large format camera into focus, the feel of the notch pattern of the film in the darkness or the touch and smell of oil paint, there is a collection of tangible and tactile sensations that come along with film and oil. Those sensations, as are film and oil, are of the world in an elemental way.”
